Fairchild Republic A-10C Thunderbolt II

A-10 Warthog

The Museum's A-10 "Warthog" 80-0186 is a Gulf War veteran. During operation Desert Storm our A-10, piloted by Col. D.E. Sawyer, was struck in the tail by an Iraqi SAM (surface to air missile) and sustained over 300 shrapnel holes. The A-10 Warthog was famous for sustaining incredible amounts of damage and bringing the pilot home safe and sound. The aircraft was offline for 11 days and after 139 hours spent on repairs it rejoined air operations. Our A-10 was used in several other operations and was last flown by Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for avionics research. Our A-10 was then retired and spent time on static display outside the Raytheon Company facility at the Tucson Municipal Airport. The aircraft was acquired in 2016.
