P-38L Lightning

Erickson Aircraft Collection

Thanks to its twin boom design, the P-38 Lightning is the most easily recognized aircraft from the U.S. Army Air Force used during WWII. It is responsible for more Japanese aircraft loss than any other American plane. It served as gunnery platform and photo-reconnaissance aircraft. It was America’s first truly modern military aircraft

The P-38 flying at the show was built in 1944 and then sent to Dallas. It was converted to a photo recon aircraft before going to Tinker Field. It was dropped from inventory in 1946 and sold to civilian buyers. After shuffling around owners, it was sold to Jack Erickson in 1990 and joined the Erickson Aircraft Collection. Restoration began in 1995, and its first flight was made in early 1997.
